Equipped with rugged GoPro cameras, Richardson takes us into a nature reserve near Pretoria, South Africa, home to many species of African wildlife. The video features a first-person perspective as Richardson calls out to Maggie, an African lion who eagerly greets and hugs her beloved human.
Throughout the film, Richardson plays and cuddles with lions and hyenas, while speaking about conservation and offering insight into animal behavior. Close-up views of majestic lions and African plains lit by the golden hour make this video a gorgeous and intimate production.
“I lie down there next to them and I just think, ah, they’re just so beautiful,” says Richardson, a self-taught animal behaviourist. He credits his non-traditional approach for his ability to get close to the lions. From his website:
His unique method of getting to know their individual personalities, what makes each of them angry, happy, upset, or irritated—just like a mother understands a child—has caused them to accept him like one of their own into their fold.
